Country Bear Jamboree Name Change Liver Lips McGrowl to Romeo McGrowl or New Character Completely. Destination D23 is over. We heard a lot about upcoming changes that may happen around Walt Disney World Resort. One of the major announcements was the update to Disney’s Country Bear Jamboree.
From Disney Parks Blog: “At Walt Disney World, the Country Bear Jamboree is getting new songs and the bears will be performing a new act in 2024!
Disney Imagineer Chris Beatty is on stage with Josh and says when the show debuts, the bears will be reinterpreting favorite Disney songs in different genres of country music. Imagineers are envisioning the new experience as a homage to the classic musical revues in Nashville and they’re working with Nashville musicians to get the authentic country sound.
The Country Bear Jamboree will still have the fun and friendly tone fans enjoy with the same famous characters like the loveable Trixie, Big Al, and others.”
What was not discussed was a major name change for one of the bears.

It appears that the bear named Liver Lips McGrowl will now be known as Romeo McGrowl or Romeo McGrowl is a new character and a cousin or relative of Liver Lips?
There is a lot of talk right now about it being a name change, which would be necessary, because ‘liver lips’ is actually a racist term used from the end of the 19th century through the 20th century. The term liver lips was used as a derogatory towards people of color.
Simple and easy, change the name to stay on the right side of history. Or retire the bear named Liver Lips, recognize the history of the name, and bring in a new character to replace him entirely.
I am going with the he is being replaced. The bear on the poster above looks different from the bear we know. Romeo McGrowl has a bouffant and sideburns, instead of just bear fur. Almost an early Elvis look, or a Porter Wagoner Nashville singer from the 60s and 70’s look.
We will find out more in the future, but for now we do know this change is happening and we do know it is expected to be done in 2024.
