One Piece has Been Renewed for a New Season 2 Eiichiro Oda Teases Chopper!.
In only two weeks of success, Netflix has already greenlit One Piece for a second season! On September 14th , 2023, Eiichiro Oda and Netflix announced in a special video that the show had been renewed. Oda in his studio retains his traditional anonymity and speaks through one of the show’s Transponder Snails to deliver the message himself. He also hints at what newcomers can be introduced to and veterans can meet once again, the Straw Hat crew’s doctor, Tony Tony Chopper, with Oda even drawing a new sketch of him.

The first season of Netflix’s One Piece ends with the crew pledging to each other to help accomplish their dreams, Buggy and Alvida meeting, and an unknown figure burning Luffy’s new wanted poster. All this sets up the final East Blue arc as being part of season 2, Loguetown, and from there, we will begin the Alabasta Saga. Even over a thousand chapters later, the Alabasta Saga is a major high point for the series. Moving from the East Blue into the Grand Line, the Straw Hats will encounter a world far weirder and more dangerous than they had ever imagined as they take on the deadly criminal organization, Baroque Works, led by the mysterious Mr.0.
This season will face numerous production challenges in translating it from the source material, as we will be introduced to new creatures, new locations, and over a dozen new Devil Fruits. To start, we’ll meet the other two Devil Fruit types, Logia and Zoan. Luffy and Buggy are Paramecia types, which just grant a miscellaneous super power, whereas Logias turn their eater into avatars of an element like smoke, fire, or sand, their bodies being made of it and able to control it to attack. Zoan types are able to morph between their human forms and a specific animal associated with their Devil Fruit.
Tony Tony Chopper is a reindeer who ate the Zoan type Human Human Fruit, so he’s a halfway between these two species and gained the ability to speak human language. For the new creatures and locales we’ll see, there are the bananagators of the desert kingdom of Alabasta, to the bear-sized carnivorous Lapahn rabbits in the tundra-laden Drum Island, and the Giants and dinosaurs we’ll see on the jungle island of Little Garden. It’s unknown how much of these characters will be CGI, practical makeup, or even if Chopper could be a puppet (or Muppet) on set, but it’s an interesting thing to consider that we’ll have to wait and see.
In a recent interview, one of the showrunners indicated that the season 2 scripts had been worked on, so we can presume that things have been in planning for a while now, and we just need to wait for production to be able to begin and the scripts to be finalized. We hope to see the show return sooner rather than later, but we’re excited to continue the journey nonetheless. One Piece is now available to stream on Netflix.
