75th Primetime Emmy Awards Were Dominated By Three Shows And Lots Of Nostalgia. Last night, live in Los Angeles, was the 75th Primetime Emmy Awards, celebrating the best in Primetime Television. The evening was hosted by ‘Black-ish’ star Anthony Anderson. Anthony’s mom was present in the audience all night as the “Wrap It Up, Mama,” She was to cut off the speeches if they went too long. Honestly, I don’t have joke-writing criticism. It was the best of the awards shows so far this season.
This evening’s Emmys celebrated all the best of television over the last 75 years. Some of the most beloved shows reunited to present the evening’s awards. We saw the cast of ‘Cheers’, ‘Ally McBeal’, ‘All In The Family’, ‘Martin’, ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ and more. And yes Katherine Heigl was part of the reunion. The nostalgia was there. It was fantastic to see Marla Gibbs and Carol Burnett present awards.
The evening was dominated by “Succession”, “The Bear”, and “Beef”. “Succession” and “The Bear” each brought home 6 awards and “Beef” brought home 5.
Some of the great moments of the night included Christina Applegate, who was nominated for her Netflix show, ‘Dead To Me.’ She announced in 2021 that she is living with Multiple Sclerosis. She was the first presenter of the night, where she was helped out to the podium with an escort and a cane. She quipped to the audience, “You are totally shaming my disability by standing.” It set the tone for a great night.
As we reported last night, Sir Elton John won an Emmy for his “Farewell From Dodger Stadium”, completing his EGOT. Niecy Nash won an Emmy for her portrayal in “Dahmer – Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story.” She gave her acceptance speech and ended it with, “And you know who I want to thank? I want to thank me,” she said. “For believing in me and doing what they said I could not do. And I want to say to myself in front of all you beautiful people, ‘Go on girl with your bad self. You did that.'” I am all for anyone who credits themselves for their own hard work.
There were many other great moments, like Kieran Culkin during his acceptance speech asking his wife for another child. Ebon Moss-Bachrach kissing costar Matty Matheson full on the mouth during their win for Best Comedy Series.
History was also made. Ali Wong became the first Asian woman to win a lead Actor Emmy. RuPaul won for “RuPaul’s Drag Race.” This makes history because he now has the most Emmy wins by a person of color. I believe he has a record-breaking 11 wins for host and producer.
